According to the mandatory regulations of the European Union on USB-C interfaces, mobile phones and tablets must adopt a unified USB-C interface. The Apple iPhone 15 series phones will debut the USB-C interface, which is consistent with Apple's existing iPad and can share chargers with the iPad.

After the iPhone 15 switches to the USB-C interface, it is expected to increase the transmission speed of Lightning to the latest USB4 specification of USB-IF, thereby meeting the needs of iPhone 15 video transmission, data transmission, high-definition audio and other applications. This speed requires the cable to be equipped with an E-Marker chip to mark the data transmission capacity of the cable, so that the cable will not become a bottleneck and affect high-speed data transmission.

Major upgrade of fast charging standards

In May 2021, the USB-IF Association officially released the USB PD3.1 fast charging standard, increasing the maximum charging power to 240W, and adding three fixed output voltage ranges of 28V, 36V, and 48V, as well as three adjustable voltage ranges of 15V-28V, 15V-36V, and 15V-48V (referred to as AVS).

The latest USB PD3.1 fast charging standard is an advanced version of the USB PD3.0 standard. PD3.1 covers the content of PD3.0 and is fully Backward compatibility; At the same time, in terms of standard terminology, USB PD3.0 has gradually been replaced by USB PD3.1 SPR, which refers to the standard power range. When the power of PD fast charging products is within 100W, it can be called USB PD3.1 SPR. When the product power is greater than 100W, it belongs to the USB PD3.1 EPR (Extended Power Range) device.

For power supply products, in order to meet the application requirements of USB PD3.1 EPR, almost all Almost all in the fast charging charger are facing new challenges, especially power supply chips, protocol chips, MOS, capacitors, transformers, connectors, etc.

In terms of cables, under the USB PD3.1 standard, they can be divided into two specifications: 20V grade ordinary cables and 50V grade EPR cables. However, it should be noted that the USB-IF Association has terminated the application for ordinary 100W cable certification at the end of December, and subsequent USB-C to USB-C cables require 240W certification. This not only requires higher requirements for cable materials, but also requires the use of the latest standard E-Marker chips.

Through ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM002C testing, it can be seen that the latest EPR cable can support 50V 5A 250W power transmission while maintaining a 40Gbps data transmission standard.

The new cable specifications have led to the upgrade of E-Marker chips. According to Charging Head Network, manufacturers such as Yichong, Huinengtai, Hanxin Micro, Infineon, Yingjixin, Weifeng, and Qinheng have launched E-Marker chips that meet the USB PD3.1 fast charging standard.

Ranking is done in alphabetical order regardless of order.

The USB-C interface has been widely used due to its advantages of forward and reverse insertion, high transmission rate, and high transmission power, and is expected to replace the traditional barrel shaped DC interface and become the first unified universal interface. By using this interface, terminal manufacturers can leverage the USB-C ecosystem to reduce the production of chargers, thereby reducing product packaging volume and better protecting the environment.

With the upgrade of the USB-C standard, high-power and high-speed data transmission will be popularized on more devices, and corresponding cables require the use of more E-Marker chips. Charging Head Network has summarized the E-Marker chips that support PD3.1 launched by 7 chip manufacturers, which can meet the needs of 240W power transmission and 40Gbps high-speed data transmission cables.

The E-Marker chips launched by these chip manufacturers have their own characteristics. The high voltage resistance protection of the pins can improve the reliability of the cables. The built-in temperature detection function of the chips can provide overheating protection based on temperature, avoiding the risk of high temperature during use. Add selling points to cables for safer use.
