April 19, 2023, Scottsdale, Arizona. With the "Qi v.2.0 Interface Specification" approved by the WPC Wireless Power Consortium Council, the Qi2 standard is now officially released. The publication of this standard paves the way for the WPC Wireless Power Consortium to establish the "Qi2 Certification Program", which enables member companies to certify products as compatible with the Qi2 standard.
Previously, the WPC Wireless Charging Alliance announced at the 2023 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that it would release the new Qi2 standard. At the exhibition, the WPC Wireless Power Consortium won three "Best of Show" awards from mainstream technology media publications. Now, the new standard has finally been officially released, which will bring consistent implementation of uniform global standards across the industry and make it easier and more efficient for consumers to use mobile devices and wearable devices.
The Qi2 ("Qi" pronounced "gas") standard will replace its predecessor, Qi, in the fast-growing transmitter and receiver market, which is expected to sell about 1 billion devices in 2023. For consumers, Qi will enable more energy-efficient and faster wireless charging of smartphones and other electronic devices. The standard will also open the market for new types of accessories that cannot use the existing "plane-to-plane" charging format, thereby further expanding the wireless charging market.
Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the WPC Wireless Power Consortium, said: "Consumers everywhere are looking for more energy-efficient and sustainable products. The perfect alignment achieved by Qi2 reduces the energy lost when the phone and charger are misaligned, thereby Improved energy efficiency. Also, the Qi2 reduces landfill waste from replacement wired chargers that require replacement from time to time due to the breakage of plugs and the stress placed on the charging cable from everyday use.”
The WPC Wireless Power Consortium is currently completing the quality assurance, certification testing and product registration necessary to assure consumers that Qi2-certified devices meet the WPC Wireless Power Consortium's rigorous standards for efficiency, safety and interoperability . Qi2 products are expected to hit the market during the holiday season at the end of 2023.
